Why does my dog keep getting worms?

I take very good care of her, she has all her shots up to date, I give her heart worm medicine every month and last month I noticed in her feces long thin white worms moving around.

I immediately took her to the vet, they did a test to see if she had worms and they said that they didn’t find anything but gave her medicine to kill the worms anyway, they told me it sounded like they were roundworms.

They went away but now a month later I noticed them again, she never goes outside except when I take her out on a leash to potty.

We do not have a fenced in yard and there are a couple other dogs in the neighborhood but I never really see them around my yard.

My dog is a peekapoo, she’s 10 months old and is an inside dog.

Does anyone have any clue as to why she keeps getting these worms? And how can I keep her from getting them?

    When you potty trained your dog, did she ever poop on the carpet? I know that some worm larvae can travel from the poop into the carpet or grass outside. And when you cleaned the area, it might not have gotten all the larvae out. They are known to be dormant for a long time and some worms such as Hookworms- they can penetrate the skin when you walk on them and travel to the intestines-yuck! People are told that if the dog poops outside and you suspect worms, then to clean up the poop with a scooper and dispose of it in a plastic bag in the garbage. That will reduce the parasite problems in the yard. In the house, I can only think to rent a steam cleaner for the carpet or shampooer (I think Lowes rents them out or check your yellow pages. Also you can buy one for like $200-good investment if you ask me!) and the suction from those cleaners can take the larvae out. Fleas are also known to carry the larvae in them. So maybe you have a fleas in the house. They ahve flea bombs and environmental sprays for that. Also remember to wash the pet’s bedding and even the pet! She may have fleas and you might not even know it. Also, you said that you give your dog those flavor tabs for heartworm. What kind are you giving her? My vet gave me the Sentinal tabs for my puppy and that is also supposed to be a preventative for intestinal worms ALONG with heartworm. If your vet isn’t giving you those, maybe you can talk to him about it. If you are giving your dog those, maybe she isn’t keeping them down. Does she vomit after taking the tablet? If she is, talk to your vet about it, or maybe you can mix it in with a gravy type dog food to make it go down easier.
    I hope I helped. I am trying to potty train my dog right now and I am so paranoid that she has worms. I don’t want my cats getting them and I DEFINTAELY don’t want to get them myself. I am constantly washing my hands and cleaning the house until I know for sure she has no worms!

    You may want to go to the vet and see if you can get her put on a preventative not just a cure for the worms she already has.

    It could be from the food, or it could be from her own feces. If you are not cleaning up her feces immediately, she will get worms again. Just be really careful about what she is exposed to. But don’t worry to much, it is common for young dogs to get worms.

    Do you have her on a flea prevenative? Sounds like she has tapeworms, you can’t find them on a fecal float. The only way to know is seeing them in the stools. They get them from injesting a flea. Even if you do have her on a prevenative she can still get fleas on her and it only takes a chew and swallow of one flea and she’ll get tapeworms. If she’s on heartworm prevention then it’s most likely NOT roundworms, they do show up on a fecal float as long as they are shedding eggs. Even if she only goes outside to potty she is still exposed to the grass, and if you don’t spray the yard for fleas and keep the other dogs out then it mostly has fleas in it. Even if you don’t see the dogs go in your yard doesn’t mean they aren’t, cats also. There is no prevention for tapeworms only treatment. They are more of a pain than anything else. Do you know what they de-wormed her with? Because tapes are only killed by giving Droncit or Drontal. What heartworm prevention are you using? If its a chewable are you sure she’s eating it and if its a topical like revolution are you sure your putting it on right? If yes to both of those than sounds like tapeworms!
