What would be the best dog breed for us?

We have small children. We have cats. We want a small-mid sized dog breed. We don’t want a yapper. It will get a daily, mid-length walk, but would not have a yard to run around in, would be an indoor dog, but in a rather large house. We don’t want something that would require being brushed more than once a week; don’t want a high-mainenance coat. My husband does not like the more slender breeds, like italian greyhounds, whippets, etc. Other than that, we’re open to suggestions? Any ideas? And please mind the conditions we have, we’re after the breed that will suit us best, we want a few opinions. Thanks in advance for the help!

    Spaniels are pretty good at being house dogs once they are out of their puppyhood.

    a sheltie!!!-they are so gentle and loving i dont kno what i would do without her-great dogs-mine is a sheltie/terrier mix

    I would have to say out of my knowledge a golden retriver or else a labrador. Labs are calm most of the time. Golden retrivers are a little more wild and more louder at times. Labs dont require much brushing at all. Golden retrivers just depending if you get long haired or med hair. I would recmoned talk to your vet about it and maybe they can recomend something. But over all i would choose a lab.

    Go onto puppyfind.com and on the left side you just choose your preferances for a dog and it will show you all of the dogs in that category. It is a place to buy dogs, but I used it to find the dog that would be best for my home. Then you just go and buy the dog you want where ever. It will tell you all you need to know about the dog.

    i think u should get a chihuahua.i find most very intelligent. u should get one, they usually get along, but look for the ones that are calm and not runnind, beind noisy or sumthing the best thing 2 do i to adopt one. ( they are probably trained halfway)

    I vote poodle cross…they don’t shed and they don’t mind being inside. I think most dogs bark sometimes, but if they are well attended to most dogs don’t bark constantly. If you want a purebred I would vote no…they have a great many health problems. Crossbreeds live longer, and have better dispositions.
    You can actually get books about selecting the best breed for you and you might enjoy reading one of them. Important to remember…some breeds are highly intelligent and require a lot of training and special attention to meet their need for stimulation…these dogs are said to feel jealous of the attention paid to children, Jack Russels are said to be like that.     first off all dogs require a regular trip to the groomer so your once a week brushing would be good for most dogs. take a trip to your local shelter and meet some of the dogs there and I am sure you will find someone to love……..keep in mind all dog at the shelter are evaluated for temperament and will fit right in to YOUR family.

    My dog is a chihuahua mix. I think probably terrier is in him. He looks like a black lab puppy and is 12 years old. He doesn’t require brushing at all and lives for his walks. He loves to snuggle and is not particularly barky. He is devoted to me as mom, but doesn’t have much use for the other family members. I am particularly happy about choosing him (from the shelter) because he’s small enough that he doesn’t eat or poop much. Good luck.

    sorry to tell you, personality-wise an IG or whippet is your best bet. They love to be indoors, shed little, and don’t need lots of exercise. However, Basenjis, i believe, cannot bark. Pugs also make nice house dogs.
    I’d stay clear from terriers (noisy and rowdy), labradors (unless you really check out the parents, cause sometimes they can be really crazy!) and German Shepherds (they have the greatest chance of attacking you or your little ones).
    Make sure to buy a purebred, as you can count on them to stay true to their breeds’ grooming requirement, behavior, and exercise requirement guidelines. Try checking out the AKC online. They can help match you with your perfect pal. Best wishes!

    I think a cocker spaniel would be a great choice for you and your family. They really are the best all-around loving dogs! My family used to raise them when I was younger and all of our other animals got along great with them. In fact my cat would snuggle up and sleep with them. They are very low maintenence, just require a haircut every couple months. Great family pets!

    I have a Bug (Boston Terrier/ Pug). She’s about 20 pounds, with the barrel-body of a Pug, but more the face of a Boston (so she’s not a pin-head!) Not only does she not shed, she hates being brushed, so that’s way low-maintenance! She loves kids and adults- not sure about the kitties. She likes to go on rather short (1/2 hour max) walks, and really only wants to go outside to do her business. No, you can’t have her. Get your own. :)

    try a BEAGLE DOG!
    it is a friendly dog(very social that needs company)
    playful energetic dog(originally bred as rabbit hunters)

    Anatomy: it is a small dog(13-15 inches tall at the shoulder)
    weigh 20-40 lbs.
    with a short white, black & tan fur.
    long droopy ears & big eyes
    life span: 12-15 yrs.

    the best dogs we have ever gotten are from the POUND. granted they are not pure bred, but they are the sweetest most calm dogs i’ve ever owned.

    SHETLAND SHEEP DOG aka SHELTIE!!!!!!!!!!

    They are wonderful dogs. We have two AKC and they are family. We have two kids and 3 cats and the Shelties LOVE to play with the cats and the kids. They are so respectful and intelligent. Ahh.. you HAVE to get one! :D

    If you want a “designer dog”, then go to the SPCA and adopt one.

    Purebred:
    Boston
    Most Terrier breeds (except Schnauzer, West Highland, etc…require daily brushing and monthly grooming)
    Beagle (hyper though)

    Go to http://www.akc.org to get some ideas…you can select by breed, or by group.

    If you find a breed that you like, and don’t mind a mix, go to the SPCA and tell them which breed you like, and they will be able to find a perfect match for you and your family.
