What types of parasites do dogs get?

My dog seems a little sick lately. He’s been pretty lethargic, his nose has gotten lighter and drier, and he’s been having diarrhea. I’m thinking that maybe he has some sort of parasite or worm. He is on Heartgard though. So I’m wondering 1) if that’s a possibility 2) if so, what types of parasites/worms could it be? Thanks.

    The parasites that dogs can get that I know of are earmites, heartworms, fleas, ticks and sarcoptic mites. I don’t know if your dog has any parasites though. I think it’s safest to check him out at the vet.

    There are other worms he can get, some in the ground, some from an ingested flea or a mosquito bite – easy to find out.
    Just take him and a stool sample, to your vet.
    Parasite can be readily identified and the proper meds given to get rid of them.

    This is not a big deal, but has to be identified to be treated – that;s where a simple fecal at your vet’s comes in.

    If you’re noticing that you’re dog’s lethargic you should call the vet asap. That’s usually a symptom of something that needs treatment.

    Could be something that just needs antibiotics, but it could be something more serious. Is your dog fully vaccinated? There are things other than heartworm that dogs can get.

    Diarrhea should not persist more than about a day, and if it does usually requires treatment to prevent dehydration.

    Call your vet. Even if you don’t bring your dog in, they can tell you what’s been going around in your area and what it’s likely to be.

    PS- a pink nose often happens because of frostbite in the winter, and by itself wouldn’t be a cause of concern. Dry or warm noses, contrary to popular belief, are also not indications of illness or fever.

    This could be a serious problem if it lasts more than a few days. I wouldn’t waste time trying to get answers here. Get your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Make sure to bring a fresh stool sample as well.
