What is a good brand of over the counter dog worm medicine that works?

If you have no clue don’t answer. i said over the counter. not at the vet. thanks
Actually i do know what kind of worms she has. I was told the kind at the supermarket do work. Otherwise i will be paying $100 at the vet.

    the kind that u go to the vet for. it costs at the most about 10 bucks and it works.

    EDIT: well u dont even know what kind of worms ur dog has and the only way u r going to find that out is if u go to the vet. over the counter wormers DONT work AT ALL. they r a waste of money if u go to the vet u will pay 10 bucks for a wormer. and its safer than giving ur dog something that he doesnt need

    EDIT: so if u know what kind of worms does ur dog have. and supermarket wormers dont work. which would u rather do. pay a vet to give care to the dog and get the RIGHT thing done. or pay for about 10 supermarket wormers and hope that it works and if it doesnt just keep on trying. honestly i would go with the safe bet.

    EDIT: and buying a wormer at Walmart isnt a good idea. they sell Hartz which isnt a good brand of anything. it is crap.

    Go to your vet !! The prson above DOES HAVE CLUE – UNLESS DIRECTED BY A VET – YOU NO CLUE WHETHER THAT IS WHAT THE ANIMAL NEEDS !!1

    None. You need to take a stool sample to the vet to be sure you’re getting a de-wormer to treat the worms your dog has – there’s different kinds of worms, and over the counter meds don’t work.

    if your dog has worms he might need more than just an over the counter dewormer, you can just bring a stool sample to the vets if you dont want to pay for an exam, and theyll check the stool and give you whats needed

    Some worms are very hard to get rid of, like Giardia. You might actually have to buy more if you try the store first vs the vets.

    The over the count stuff either doesn’t work or gives your dog diarrhea to eject just enough worms to make you think it helped. Not all vets require a visit to distribute wormer, especially if they have seen the dog before for vaccinations. Others may do a fecal, so they know what kind of wormer to use. You and your dog will be much better off to spend the $ on something that works safely than a bunch of stuff that doesn’t.

    There are numerous types of worms, so there is no one answer. You need to bring a stool sample to your vet and have them amke the decision. Once you know the type of worms, then you can try to find a vet strength dewormer from someplace like this: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/NavResults.cfm?Nty=1&Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntk=All&N=2001&Ntt=dewormer&Np=1

    But, don’t guess at it. If you are wrong, you will waste more money on different dewormers and put your dog at risk for dying.

    Not sure where you live, but even ‘Petsmart’ (a HUGE pet store chain) doesn’t carry worm medicines. Reason being is there are many types of worms and only the vet can determine the proper medication. The meds at the vets are cheap and work excellent. IF you happen to have a store that carries the medications..I wouldn’t trust it. You;ll be spending money for nothing. It is a sad truth. In fact, when I had my dogs medicated for fleas..it was cheaper at the vets then the store stuff. And it worked. The flea collars only work in the area around the neck so that is useless. Just an example.

    Everyone is telling you the truth we can’t tell you the kind to get when we don’t know what kind of worms it has if you give it the wrong kind your pet will still have worms call a vet tell them what the worms look like and they will be able to you what is the best wormier for your pet

    Actually there are many. Brandnames are not important, but active ingredients are important.
    Two of the most common ingredients and most effective ones are Fenbendazole and Pyrantel Pamoate.

    If you are not sure of what worms or if the dog hasn’t been regularly wormed then Fenbendazole is the chemical you would choose first. It is sold under a few brandnames, one of them is panacur. If you can’t find that, then just be sure to read all the labels under ingredients. Fenbendazole kills worms in the gut and migrating larvae including tape worms. Many vets give Fenbendazole in a three day round, others only do it once. You can make your own decision on that.

    The second common wormer ingredient is Pyrantel Pamoate. It kills strongids in the gut. It is also sold under many brandnames. It doesn’t kill as many types of worms, but is safe for young puppies and expectant females. It will kill hookworms and roundworms.

    Just read the labels under ingredients. You might have better luck finding a good wormer at a farm supply store rather than a department store, but they are available in both places. Dogs should be wormed once a month. The Heartguard you get from the vet has two types of wormers in it, one of them is pyrantel.

    Of course if you still see the dog passing worms after using these, you would need to talk to the vet about a round of ivermectin. That is more difficult to dose, so you will need dosing advice. But, Yes, it is certainly possible to safely worm your dog with OTC full spectrum wormers.

    Someone mentioned praziquantal. That is used for tapeworms, but not others. It is a bit more expensive. If the dog has fleas or had them, then I would use Fenbendazole first. You can do it for three consecutive days, and it will kill tapeworms in the three day cycle. It’s cheaper, and has the advantage of being a wider spectrum wormer.

    For roundworms anything with pyrantel pamoate. Nemex and Anthelban are two brands. You won’t find it in the stores but you can buy it mail order. Two companies that sell it are Jeffers and UPCO. For heartworm you can use 1% ivermectin labeled for cattle. It is the same active ingredient as Heartguard. Once a month give about 1/2 cc for a 50 pound dog. Mix it with his food. Whipworms can be treated with Panacure. Jeffers and UPCO carry all this stuff. You might get it at a feed store or livestock supply store.

    The over the counter DOES NOT work this has been proven many times.
    if you get at teh store plan on doing it at least every month and it will end up costing more than if you went to the vets.
    I have lived in New York and Virginia and the meds never cost more than $15 for teh meds and only $8 for the stoll sample.

    It’s not the kind,
    it’s the ingredients
    Pyrantel Pamoate (sp?) works for hook and round.
    Pranziquantel works for tape.
