What breed of dog is the worst with kids?

One of the main questions we get on here is “What breed of dog is best with kids?”

But what is worst?

I know any dog can be ok with kids if raised, trained and socialized well with experienced and non-abusive owners, but some are definitely better than others.

What dog breeds would you say potential owners should avoid if they have a family?

    I’d avoid any small breed dog if I was a family with small children.

    Not because small breed dogs are bad with children, but because children can easily hurt a small breed dog unintentionally.

    I’m not sure if this is true or not but I’ve heard the dalmatian isn’t the nicest breed.

    Great Danes are gentle giants and are harmless. Labs make the best pets. Stay away from fighting dog breeds…pitbulls bulldogs and chows. All are ranked high on attacks

    The previous poster is correct. Dalmatians are notoriously unreliable around small children, as of course are pit bulls. Those would be the two breeds I would avoid at all costs, and likewise the very smallest “toy” breeds. The toy breeds should be avoided because it’s easy for small children to hurt them accidentally.

    but can i just say, that i believe that any dog can be great with any person no matter how young or old if properly trained and socialized…the info below is just what i found from google

    according to the first site on my source list:
    # Pit Bull
    # Rottweiler
    # Chow Chow
    # Doberman
    # German Shepherd Dog
    # Siberian Husky
    # St. Bernard
    # Alaskan Malamute
    # Great Dane
    # Akita

    according to the second site on my source list:
    #1: Dalmatian: Their large size, need for exercise and protective nature can make these pets very aggressive when they feel threatened. Their need for exercise will also make them excitable when they’ve been hanging around the house for an extended period of time.

    #2 Rat Terrier: Even though this dog is fairly small, like most terriers, it is known to be very territorial. Getting these types of dogs familiar to new baby smells may be a good idea before bringing a baby home from the hospital.

    #3 Presa Canario: These large and strong dogs can become violent when they feel they need to defend themselves. If you have one in the house, make sure they know that guests and children are friendly visitors.

    #4 Rottweilers: These dogs have a long tradition of being used as guard dogs. If you have adopted a Rottweiler make sure that it is trained and responsive before bringing it home to the family.

    #5 Pit bulls: These strong and sometimes aggressive dogs are very dangerous when they are untrained. Pit bulls naturally have a reputation for intimidation and the wrong pit bulls can be dangerous to have around the yard when neighbors and kids are playing.

    #6 Toy dogs: Small dogs like Yorkies and Maltese are fragile, and children may unintentionally hurt them if they do not know how to properly handle them. If irritated, these small dogs are known to nip or bite.

    #7 Chow Chows: These dogs need a strong hand and lots of training before they are ready to be around children. Untrained Chows can be aggressive and unfriendly towards strangers.

    I don’t trust advice like the one you are asking for. Everything that is told about dog breeds is valid in a statistical sense. Any dog can be a very good Companion to children and old people, but you should make sure
    that

    1 People don’t hurt dogs.
    2 Small variations in behavior can be determinant in certain special
    circumstances making a otherwise “good” dog turn aggressive.

    I’m sure most people would list pit bulls and Rottweilers as 2 definite nos for a child’s dog, but there are others that are best avoided too. I would say avoid Chows, Dalmatians and Chihuahuas. Chows are quick tempered. Their long fuzzy hair makes them look like teddy bears. I child may be tempted to want to hug this dog, but usually they don’t want to be cuddled and can get agressive. Dalmatians are usually deaf or nearly so. An excited energetic child can easily startled them and be the victim of a quick bite. Chihuahuas are also nervous dogs. A child’s quick actions can scare them and cause agressive behavior.

    Some of the best dogs for children are labs, retrievers, beagles and standard poodles.

    Good question.

    I’m going to say mostly small breeds because sometimes kids don’t know how small the are.

    Also I have heard horror story’s of St. Bernard’s just randomly biting kids. I dont think I’d want that around my kids!

    I really think it depends on the kids and the dog itself.

But what is worst?

I know any dog can be ok with kids if raised, trained and socialized well with experienced and non-abusive owners, but some are definitely better than others.
