what are the effects of heart worms in a dog who has had heart worms for years?

I have my late grandfathers dog. As far as i can remember she has had heart worms, at least 10 yrs. She has lost a lot of weight and has an absest or tumor coming out of her right hind leg. I don’t want her to suffer. Is this an effect from heartworms and do I need to have her put down?

    Well, first you need to have a bloodtest to see if it really is heartworm and probably other bloodtest to see if the dog can go through heartworm treatment. It is very hard on the dog. The growth on the leg has nothing to do with heartworms. It probably is a tumor that has abscessed. It should need antibiotics and be removed. Don’t let the dog lick at it. It does not help. Go see a veterinarian to get all your options.

    I would immediately get to a vet. They can give you a good answer. Heart worms can be very hard on a dog. But you never know, with a few tests they may find the trouble. It may not be that serious.

    You need to put her down. I had a dog with heart worms and I didn’t put him down and he suffered a lot before he died. Don’t let the dog suffer.

    Check with your vet first, but if the dog has heart worms, eventually they will die. If the dog has weight loss, absest or tumor and 10 years of age, my suggestion is to humanely put it down.
    I hate telling people this, but do you want to prolong the life of an animal who is already suffering?
    Do what you think is best is my only real suggestion, the rest is just a matter of personal opinion.

    my dog died like that,and had the same symptoms.it’s a slow death.he/she will suffocate.the heart worm or worms fill the blood vessals and cut off the oxygen to the dog.i would let a vet look at the dog and see what they say.sorry!

    p.s. i will never watch a dog die like that again.to painfull
