the dog back. why? because they don’t adopt small dogs to families with children under 14. is it just me or does anyone else realize that A) it’s a dog and B) there are too many unwanted dogs needing adoption to be putting outlandish stipulations on adoption policy like…we don’t adopt to families with children under 14?

    Yeah. It’s quite stupid, really. I honestly think the organization is causing all of this controversy because Ellen DeGeneres is a celebrity, and not because they care about the dog.

    It wasn’t a case of the hairdresser and family not being suitable adopters, it is the time-tested rule in all good shelters that they – the people who originally rescued the dog and “placed” it after reviewing the would-be adopter – be iven the dog back, if the original adopter can’t keep it, so that a new, carefully reviewed adoption take place. It has happened too often that the poor animal gets passed around by people mainly interested in getting rid of it, and that is not in the animal’s best interest.

    they have that rule to cover their rears. 9/10 kids 14+ can handle a dog (meaning not doing things that might frighten the dog into biting) I think 14 is a bit old for a cut off … I think 12 would be better but a line has to be drawn somewhere. Yes, in this case the dog would have likely been fine and everyone happy … But how about this hypothetical? If Ellen decided she couldn’t keep the dog and gave it to Michael Vick. I think all of the responses would be VERY different. Applauding the adoption agency for removing the dog and denouncing Ellen. Yes, I know this didn’t happen … but the contract is written the way it is to PREVENT those sort of things from happening. Once Moms for Mutts starts making special exceptions because of pressure from a celebrity … their ethics really come into question.

    Rescue/Adoption agencies can be a real buster. We inquired of a few agencies when we were ready to give a pouch a good home. They reserved the right to come to our home, see what we were doing or not doing that they demanded and REMOVE the dog! They pretend to be understanding and desirous of finding homes, but I think it’s only some Nazi power trip.

    We went the the local SPCA, got a WONDERFUL dog that had been neglected and abused. He is such a happy dog. He is repaying us a thousand times for saving him.

    i agree stupid rule. kids and pets, who would ever think of having both in one house. Ellen has used her celebrity because it was about to be used against her. i have no problem with Ellen putting this in the news. it is a much better use of celebrity then listen to some of them telling use to save the planet by cutting off our electric and selling our cars as they fly around the world to their different homes.

    I agree they should look over there policies. But at the same time agree with them about taking this dog. Rules are made for a reason and should be followed, (contracts are legal)
    They are made in best interest of the dogs.

    I think this agency forgot its not about the money…its about the dog

    I have 2 small dogs and 4 kids and there has never been and issue… if you buy a dog from shall I say a pet shop they dont say this dog cant live with kids….

    GIVE IGGY BACK… HE WAS HAPPY

    Rescues have their reasons for not adopting out dogs to certain families/individuals. They have an adoption process that this family did not fulfill.

    Ellen had a contract that she didn’t care about. Stated in that contract was that the dog would have to be returned to the rescue. It’s as simple as that.

    AS I have stated there are good rescues that truly think about the dog then there are bad rescue that are on a powertrip think about themselves or those trying to make a profit no better than a byb.

    O.K. while I realize Ellen went against the rules, I don’t think she was being spiteful. she thought she was doing a good thing. She sees the woman she gave the dog to daily. I saw on Good Morning America the woman from the rescue organization ,and she is now just being spiteful. I realize her job is to look at the best interest of the animal, but I’m sure those people were being good owners. And a 14 and under policy? That is plain ridiculous. That has always been a pet peeve of mine with any shelter. I think the shelter should do a check, let the woman fill out an application and be able to get the dog back.

    You seem to think that most people are intelligent and teach their children to respect dogs. THEY DON’T.
    Sure, Ellen’s friend might be different, but how is an agency supposed to know that?
    Most young children looooove little dogs and that doggy love frightens the dog because they don’t respect the dog or their space. Little dogs fear bite a LOT, and children (and their now angry parents) don’t understand that it’s not the dog’s fault.
    Think about it – you’re this 10 lb dog and you see a child who is 3 times your size barreling at you and screeching. Is he happy or is he going to kill me? That’s what the dog’s thinking. What if the happy toddler trips over something and falls toward the dog? Chances are, the child is going to get bit.
    They have rules for a reason. The people who complain the loudest about them surely will be the first to file a suit when their child gets bit.

    It’s pretty obvious to me that it’s all about the money.Since it’s a celebrity who has done this these people ran straight to an attorney and as soon as they come up with the retainer the one speaking on their behalf now will be filing a huge lawsuit agains Ellen.
    The fact that people were so moved by Ellens emotional state they have made death and arson threats against these folks only adds more dollar signs.
    The owners of Mutts and Moms are’nt smart enough to realize that they’ll probably win their suit but it’ll put them out of buisness and I hope they realize that this has added to the reason why people won’t adopt from a shelter.It’s my hope that shelters all across the country won’t be affected by this but I bet they will.
    Was Ellen wrong in putting this heartbreaking story on the air? Hell No!!!!!
    People should be made aware of the way these people did buisness.And shame on them for taking the pup to stick it back in a cage rather than allow it to stay in a home where it’s loved and wanted.
    But the public had no right to take up the fight in a manner that placed Ellen in more jeopardy than she already was.Picketing the place would have been far more effective in swaying Mutts and Moms to rethink their policy and return the dog once their sales went so far down they had to to stay in buisness.

    Each organization has it’s own rules and guidelines and the hairdresser already has an adult dog in the home. Frankly, I don’t trust Ellen Degeneres’ judgment in the matter and am willing to defer to the Mom and Mutts organization! Geez, the stupid woman gave the pup away because it was too rambunctious and had too much energy!! What did she think puppies were? Did she want one in a coma?

    If the dog adoption people don’t want the dog in a home with kids or another adult dog, then it’s their right and Ellen should have looked into who she got the dog from AND looked at their rules BEFORE she adopted and not after the deed was done.

    We all have to live with rules like that. I adopted a dog from the shelter and signed something that said I can’t give the dog away. Why should celebrities be able to flaunt the rules? What makes them think that they’re entitled to special treatment?

    I have a friend that adopted a dog who also had cats. After a day she realized it was not going to work and she found the dog a loving home. Everyone was happy and the dog was rescued. We were so happy she did not have to take the poor dog back to the shelter. Of course she is not a celebrity and there was no reason to take the dog back.
    With all the unadopted animals in the world this is so sad and rediculous. How sad for the family and how sad for the poor confused little dog. Sometimes the “intent” of the rules is more important than supporting the rules to the letter of the law. The rescue shelter could have handled this situation in so many different ways (like something as obvious as visiting the new home with the little dog) and would have eliminated the bad press. Now more dogs will suffer and not be adopted from them because of their extremely poor decision making.
