Should you adopt a dog from the animal shelter (SPCA) or a no-kill shelter? What is the difference?

I want to adopt a puppy/young dog and definitely want to do it in a way that will save a dog. Should I adopt from the shelter or a no-kill shelter? What is the difference? Any good recommendations in Dallas, TX?

    The SPCA and the Humane Society are both no-kill shelters.

    If you really want to save a dog from euthanasia go to your county Animal Services (the "pound") – dogs there have only a few days to be reclaimed by their owners or adopted out – then they are put to death. So you see, Animal Services is the first place to go if you are looking for a pet.

    I have saved several dogs from there – and they are wonderful pets – you won’t regret saving the life of a homeless animal.

    No kill shelters won’t take certain dogs. If you really want to save a life, get one from the pound, that’s awaiting execution.

    Okay well no kill means they don’t kill there animals or put them to sleep and the SPCA is a no kill shelter but they usually take their pets to paca to be killed. Your best way to save an animal is from the spca. SO THEY DONT TAKE THEM TO BE PUT TO SLEEP. In a no kill, they don’t kill them so a dog & a cat have a longer chance of getting adopted in fact they dont go out of the shelter untill they are adopted/

    You should visit all places possible to figure out which dog would best suit you and your own personal lifestyle. Talk with the employees as they know these dogs best. At a humane society, they will have valuable advice but will not have spent AS much time with the animals as those that work at a no kill shelter. You see, at a no kill shelter, they may have the animal for a month to a few years and thus have time to really dig down and see the animals true personality. But as for which to adopt from.. go with the shelter that houses that one or two special dogs. The ones that you see and just know you wouldn’t be able to go home without. The ones that tug at your heartstrings.

    I don’t know anything about Dallas but getting a dog out of ANY shelter is a good deed. You can go to this website http://www.dogsindanger.com I hope I got it right but you can google it too. They really need you to help them and they have the dates when they are to be euthanized on there. I can’t even go on there anymore cause it really makes me sick and I can’t get any more dogs now.

    Try getting one from the shelter where dogs are in line for death.

    Okay it is tricky-a part of me likes the idea of saving a dog from certain death by getting it out of a kill shelter. They other part of me doesn’t really like to support their killing practices. It is whatever feels best to you and wherever you find a dog to fit your lifestyle

    I completely agree with the post telling you that you should adopt the dog that is right for you…regardless of what type of shelter it comes from.

    Each shelter will have a different time limit they can/will house animals and try to get them adopted out before euthanization. No kill shelters will never euthanize the animals…however, they are much more likely to turn an owner forfeit away. The SPCA will take most animals in, and your city animal control (pound) will take all.

    When we adopted our first dog, we looked at several shelters and found dogs we were considering in some of the shelters. However, when we got to the pound, there was one particular dog we both really fell in love with that was on his last day before being put to sleep. That was what made up our minds. We liked the other dogs we saw, but we couldn’t bare the thought of this wonderful dog sitting in a shelter waiting to be killed. So…we took him home. Now that I know more about the pound and how short of a time those animals have and how many animals are taken in…we made a decision to always check animal control first. That’s where we also found our second dog.

    Either way you save a life. No-kill shelters just don’t put adoptable dogs and cats to sleep for lack of space but they also get to the point where they can’t accept additional animals until one is adopted. Many times these no-kill shelters get some of their adoptable pets from the local animal shelter in the first place.

    I am from Canada so I can’t help you as far as the Dalls area goes (obviously)…however..
    I would first check out the shelters that do NOT have a "no kill" policy to see if there is a dog you can fall in love with…They are the ones that have a limited life expectancy..Having said that, if no dog appeals to you…go for it..go to a "no kill" shelter and find your soulmate.
    Do not feel bad if there is not a dog in the shelters that don’t have a "no kill" policy. who you love…Unfortunately, there are reasons that the dogs are there…sometimes for viciousness, sometimes not. If I was to ever "rescue" another dog (I have 2 "rescues" and 2 "planned" dogs). I would ALWAYS get one from a shelter that wouls be willing to euthanize a dog…but that is just me…go with your heart…I don’t judge…Be happy.
