Problem with dog peeing when I come home?

Hello, I also have a Westie who is 5 years old. We just got her a couple weeks ago and she’s been a great dog. My problem is whenever I come home she pees a little. I try not to make a big deal about me coming home, trying to not make her excited. But as soon as I come by her she does it. Any ideas on this one?

    I would say when you come home, open the door and let her out..before you even step foot in side. Then give her all the attention she needs and let her piddle out in the yard

    When you come home open up the door and let her out so she can pee outside. I would not get mad at her just not give her attention when she does that. We had a dog that we adopted that did that – although we think she was abused. She was a large dog so it was like a lake. When we came home we would squat down to her level and talk calmly to her and/or let her out when we opened the door.

    Sounds like you are dealing with this the proper manner (basicly ignoring the pupper)

    Some dogs who urinate when they greet people may do so out of nervousness or excitement and scolding will always make the problem worse. Do not greet your pet right away. Ignore her until she settles down and then greet her.

    It’s likely that she was reprimanded before when people arrived home. It’ll take some time, but she’ll get over it.

    Your dog is either very excitable, very high strung and nervous, or perhaps even a little afraid of you. Your reaction to her when this happens is REALLY important.

    It is possible that she is being left in the house for too LONG, anything more than 4 or 5 hours creates potential difficulties.

    Perhaps her previous owner was unkind to her when she or he came home. When a dog has been in the house for 8 or 9 hours, it needs to go out immediately when you do get home. Some people IGNORE that fact. Perhaps her previous owner did.

    She’s pretty new to you only having been with you for a couple of weeks, so when you DO come home, CALL her right through the door before you even OPEN the door, meet her right at the door if possible, or take her to the door immediately before she even has time to react to you, and take her outside, and praise her lavishly when she squats to pee outside.

    You need to spend substantial time with your dog and if she pees in the house, tell her “pee OUTSIDE” and take her out into the yard immediately, do not scold her, hit her, or make a big deal about the dribble.

    If you think she’s a great dog, she’s worth working with and correcting this problem. It’s most likely just nerves, with you being new to her, and her surroundings and people being new to her. At 5 years old, she’s pretty old to have been moved from one owner to another.

    hi my dog does the same thing. so after i open the door i scoop her up and put her outside on her chain. she has a few accidents, but nothing for me to get upset about. at least she goes by the door i let her out of. she just get’s excited, and so does yours. but yeah if you can let her out before you step in the house. good luck.

    She sounds like a submissive or excited pee-er ! My dog used to do this, so the minute I got home, I just go outside and the dog would follow me, then I would say go potty and when he did, I would praise him. I made sure at first , no eye contact, no talking, no petting. Just usher her outside to do her thing.

    first of all are you sure she just does it when you first get home? I’m thinking maybe it’s a bladder problem she is a little old and maybe she’s done it once or twice that you haven’t seen,,maybe she just cant hold it (like me anymore) lol, Id talk to the vet and she what he has to say,it sounds like your getting a lot of good advice but maybe a vet may have some ideas were not thinking of: good luck

    She’s obviously very glad to see you and gets excited but seeing that she is 5 years old she really shouldn’t be doing this. (Puppies do because they don’t have control of their bladders yet)

    She could have a bladder infection or other bladder problem. Check with your vet.
