How often do you worm your dog(s)???

I worm my dogs every six months.
I just got worming medication from the vet , and when the tech asked me “do you see worms ?” and I said “no” , she said ” why are you worming?”
Well, I am not waiting til they HAVE worms to fix the problems I told her, why not fix the problem before you have the problem?

What do you do?
I have wormed like this for 10 + years and never had a problem with any worms…. They go to the vet for shots every year, get rabies,parvo and all regulated shots, boardatella (for kennel cough , cuz we board some).
But if you just don’t worm, thats wrong I think… you could have dogs that are infested and eating their insides with parasites
Both of mine are also on K9 Advantix Plus .
Well maintained and overly loved… I would never do anything to do any harm to either of them.

    I give my dog a heartworm pill every month but I don’t do any other deworming unless I see a problem.

    Do you give your dogs heartworm meds every month? You should that will take care of all the serious worms. Tape worms are the ones you will see in the stool. They come from fleas. Dont worm them unless you see them. And if you see them treat for fleas and worms.

    You do what, That is Crazy! Where do you live.

    The make heartworm medication that you give your dog every month to prevent worms, you do not need to worm them. Whoever you are seeing as vet, I sure the heck would ditch them, they are making a profit on you and unfairly doing things to your dog.

    I would never do that my dog, that is just wrong, give them heart worm medication and flea and tick treatment, once a month and they should be fine. Bring them in once a year all is good, Your poor dog, that is just wrong.

    i have 6 dogs, i worm my dogs every month even if i dont see any worms on their stool, i worm them to let them stay healthy and makes them bigger too…thats okay said my dogs vet.

    We only wormed our dogs as puppies, once. However, they were never really outside dogs. I would just watch and check their stool occassionally.

    The first dose should be given at 6 weeks, then i believe again at 12 weeks. Also you want to worm them right after they have givrn birth. Anytime after that just when you see worms coming out of them and they are eating and drinking a lot more, thats what they do when they have tapeworm.Im not sure about roundworm and hookworm. Just consult your vet if you suspect anything unusual.

    Unless you have a fecal done, you do not know if your dogs even have worms. You could therefore, be paying for and giving unneccessary meds. Wormers are poisons. Only a poison could kill worms. Sure, it’s low dose poison. It’s enough to kill a worm, but not the dog. Giving unneeded, low dose poisons can have an effect on the dog’s long term health. Only use wormers if needed, not as prevention.

    I no longer use the wormers. I use a natural wormer that is not a poison, DE.

    Why would you question somebody who has a doctorate in animal medicine? Do you second guess you’re doctor? Listen to the woman, you shouldn’t be giving you’re dog worm medicine if it doesn’t have worms, thats like taking a cough syrup to prevent a cold! its pointless!!

    you got that right. you don’t have to wait till you see some worms at all. i use canex, febantel, etc. to deworm my dogs. and the medicine insert says that you have to do this every three months. that’s what i do, whether i see worms on my dogs or not.
    if you are pertaining to heart worms in dogs (which can’t be removed by canex or febantel — these are medicines for typical worms only) , it is usually at least 6months after the last time you have given your dogs the medicine. there are also medications which are good for 1 year.
    i couldn’t agree with you more. dogs aren’t like humans who can claim or complain about pains and such… so, just follow the order in the medicine insert. which advises owners as to when dogs should be de-wormed.

    Since a healthy, adult dog wouldn’t be bothered by worms anyway, unless it’s a very heavy infestation, my dogs are never wormed (at least not since they were rescued, they needed worming then). They’ve had a few fecals done and don’t have worms. Most people already over-vaccinate their dogs, then add to their problems with senseless chemicals for deworming a dog who doesn’t need it. Makes no sense to me!

    I wormed my dog once- when I got him from the shelter. If I ever am worried he has worms again then I’ll take a stool sample to the vet- find out- then if he does I’ll deworm.

    Okay- why don’t we constantly take antibiotics to avoid getting sick as humans? Because we would grow immune to them, get really sick and die.

    If you deworm your dog when he has no worms he may grow immune to it and then you’ll have to find another way to deworm when he has worms. Also why would you pay to ‘fix’ something that isn’t broken?

    There’s nothing wrong with being overly cautious. Dewormers aren’t going to hurt your dogs. However, personally, since I use heartworm preventative monthly all year and flea preventative almost every month, I don’t use extra wormers. If I saw tape segments (the only ones you’ll see normally in stool anyway) I’d get meds. If my dog had diarrhea or something, I’d take a stool sample and get meds. The only time you’ll see anything other than tapeworm segments is if your dog has such a severe infestation it’s vomiting roundworms or something. Hopefully you’d see diarrhea or funny eating habits and be at the vet before then anyway. So your vet tech was partially misguiding in her information anyway.
    Summation, you’re not going to hurt your dogs by worming them, but your heartworm preventative will take care of rounds and hooks (depending on which HW you use) and flea prevention helps lower the chances of tapes, which are going to be a separate treatment from regular dewormer anyway. But I certainly won’t knock you for doing extra care for your dogs, since it’s not going to hurt them!

    My pit get wormed every month. I use Heartguard Plus, which protects against ALL worms. That is what my vet recommended, and he knows best.
