Have you ever heard of using Turpentine on a dog’s tick bites to take the pain out?

My dog got a tick in his ear and his ear and side of his head is painful. Several people told me that you could put turpentine on it and it would take the pain out? Of course I have not done this and will not do this, but I just wanted to see if anyone had heard of this.
My dog has a bad reaction whenever he is gets a tick bite. The area will swell up and have fever in it. This happens eventhough we have made sure the head or pinchers of the tick have been removed. I guess he is just allergic to the stuff the tick uses to deaden the skin. You all have been very helpful.

  I don’t think that tick bites cause pain because the tick injects an anti-pain chemical when it bites. If the dog is itching, the dog might be allergic to the chemical the tick injects.
  I have given my dog liquid Benadryl when this happened to him.

  I have heard of it used to release the tick but i definitely would not try it near ears or eyes. I doubt it would if it would help with pain. A tick in the ear should only be removed by a vet.

  the turpentine is used to smother the tick while it’s still on the dog… they can’t breathe if you put turpentine on their face while they are burrowed into the dog, and they will back out.

  it’s not painful to have a tick, unless there is infection?

  if your dog seems to have an infection from a tick, get him or her to the vet…

  Heard of it, don’t do it. Will only aggravate the skin more. They say to use it for human tick bites, as well. Just don’t do it.

  If you remove the tick with alcohol (which loosens up the pinchers), there should be no pain or aggravation. If you removed the tick just by yanking it out, there’s a possibility the pinchers are still embedded and are causing discomfort for your dog.

  Turpentine has been used medically since ancient times.

  * Applied externally to the affected areas, turpentine is a highly effective treatment for lice.
  * Turpentine can be mixed with animal fat as a primitive chest rub for nasal and throat ailments. Many modern chest rubs still contain some turpentine (e.g., Vicks).
  * Internal administration of turpentine is no longer common today, though it was once the preferred means of treating intestinal parasites due to its antiseptic and diuretic properties.
  * Drinking turpentine is extremely dangerous and can be life threatening. In addition, drinking turpentine is not an effective way to induce an abortion.

  People are idiots. That is plain and simple. General rule: If you wouldn’t even THINK of doing it to yourself, then don’t do it to a dog. If your dog is in that much pain, call the vet. Last time I had to get pain meds for my dog, it cost me under $10 for a week’s worth. It was money well spent.

  Turpentine….Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

  In your case then, there are a few products that will repel ticks-feed stores usually have them, and there is at least one normal pet one. Also certain diets make them less likely (a bit of garlic helps, but not much). Then just do very regular checks. The longer theyre in the more junk from the tick gets in.

  Gotta say it:
  Apply nothing to the tick. Remove it by pulling straight after grabbing as close to the head as possible with tweazers. It if moves afterward youre good. If it doesnt go to the vet. Dont twist it, dont try to smother it, etc. All of these methods end up pushing more toxins out.

  Afterward, a bit of antibiotic cream should be all thats needed. Pain from the spot usually means there is an infection. Try to cream, if it persists call the vet.

  For this time though, is the bite spot red? Any red veining coming from it or rings around it?

  Have you ever read the warnings on the back of a can of turpentine? If you had, you would not be asking this question or listening to fool people who tell you do to things like this. Read the warnings and then ask yourself if you would use it on yourself.
