Has anyone else had a problem with a leaking dog?

My spayed 4 1/2 year old female dog dribbles urine while sleeping. It’s not a bladder infection, it’s a problem from a bad spay job (TY Humane Society Hacks)… Just wondering how common the problem is.

    some times nerves and insecurity do you love it enough. there is also the chance that she gets exited when she is dreaming.

    Actually, this seems to be a common problem that i know of. I housesit for three dogs, and one of them was spayed way to early. She is currently on vet- prescribed pills to keep it under control. Just figured i’d let ya know you’re not the only one!

    I’ve heard of many dogs having this problem. I personally have never owned one but then again I tend to wait to get my pups spayed longer than the vet recommends because they just seem too small at the recommended age. There may be a pill to help with that, but not sure. Ask your vet next time you see them, some will even talk to you over the phone and tell you if there is something they can do.

    Very often im afraid to say, humane society vets are under tremendos pressure to get thier jobs done quickly and often slip up due to the huge demand on them to get to every available animal. This also happens to bitches that have many litters, the muscles in the urethra ( the tube that passes urine from the body) become loose or dont heal well after trauma, when she relaxes while shes asleep the urine easily can pass. there is an operation to re-tighten these muscles again, its simple and common and most of the time costs around the same or a little more than a spay, but make sure you find a good vet that will take the time to perform the operation well. there are certain web sites where you can find vets in your area, and some even rate their ability, and customer satisfaction. if you continue to let it go it can lead to infection and acidic ulcers(burns from ureaic acid) around her vulva. Most vets provide payment plans… I hope this helped you! P.S. till you can get her in, go to your local pet supply store and buy dog panties, the have pads u put in them just like when its our time of the month and most dogs dont mind them, the are used mostly for bitches in heat. They will keep her from getting urine on your furniture, bedding, exct. hope all goes well

    Based on my experience from spaying animals during school it is unlikely that your dog is leaking urine because of a bad spay job. (It is still possible but unlikely they say about 20% of spayed dogs especially large breed dogs have this problem post-spay but it is more common in neutered dogs) Problems that you do fear the most after spaying animals is that the animal is unable to urinate because the structures that carry urine from the kidney to the bladder are at risk of being tied off from a suture. The condition that you are describing is called urinary incontinence which means there may have been some loss of control of when your dog could urinate. She does have some significant control since she is only dribbling but not 100%. Common causes include an hyperactive bladder this is when the bladder contracts to empty to soon. Another condition is called ectopic ureters this condition is usually noticed at a young age and is when the structures that carry urine from the kidney to the bladder attach to the wrong part of the bladder resulting to leaking of urine. Also another condition is when the muscle that surrounds the urethra (The structure that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body) may not be contract appropriately. There are several other potential causes as well such as an abnormal bladder anatomy etc. There are several diagnostic tests that can be done to find out the cause which may not be necessary unless she gets worse. Your dog can get medication for this problem if it is due to abnormal control of the muscles of the bladder, or muscles surrounding the urethra which is the most common causes of this condition and it can get pretty much under control in most cases.
