dog worms? how do you get rid of them?

okay.
the other day my husband noticed that the dog was scooting his butt across the floor, so i bought this worm medicine. over the next few days I’ve been laying in bed and i noticed that around the dog there was a worm-like snot color looking thing and i picked it up and it started moving and i ran into the bathroom and flushed it down the toilet. websites say that the the worms will come out in the stool [poop] so i don’t know what i am supposed to do?
i looked online at a website and it looked like a fragment of a tape-worm,
but i could be wrong.

    did it look like spagetti or a grain of rice?? thats what will determine what worm medication to get…this website will tell you all about each type of dog worm: http://www.canismajor.com/dog/worms.html

    sounds like it looked more like spagetti the way you described it.. so I would say its probably a round worm… you can get a product called strongid.. and most vets will do a stool sample without an exam and tell you exactly what type of worms you have and get you the proper meds for it….good luck.. smile

    if it looked like a piece of rice then its a tapeworm and its caused from ingesting fleas.. all of that is fully described on that web page…. please do not give you dog tobacco or whatever… just get a stool sample to your vets office and tell them about how much he weighs and get the right medication… its not that expensive to get a stool exam and the meds are not that expensive either…..again good luck

    EDIT: if it is tapeworms you have 2 problems = the worms and the fleas… go to a vet with a stool sample and they can verify the type of worm and help you get the proper medication.. over the counter stuff is a waste of $$.. smile especially if it is tapeworms…. good luck…

    Well you SHOULD take your dog to the vet to get the worms properly diagnosed.. so that you can treat them properly.. If your dog was infested you will very likely see worms in the stool and coming out now and then.. You should get it done properly and give the proper medication.. Those OTC products don’t do a good job.. Especially if you don’t know what kind they are..

    Edit : Don’t give your dog tobacco like someone suggested.. Tobacco is poison to dogs.

    Take the dog to the vet and have them dewormed… not to mention shots too. It probably also needs it’s anal glands expressed also, from the sound of it.

    Most worm medicine is only good on certain kinds of worms. If you think your dog still has them, take him to the vet to find out what kind he has so you can get rid of them.

    Hehe… yuck. That’s just the medicine doing it’s work. If it doesn’t stop in (I think) 7 days, take them to the vet.

    You should take your dog to the vet right away! ask the vet if you should give him some medication! don’t worry he or she wil be ok and fine! DON’T WORRY! bye!

    Either take your dog to the vet or get a stool sample (no more then 24 hours old) and take it in. Your vet can determing what type of worm it is and can then give you the proper meds.

    Don’t use that over the counter stuff – it’s just not effective. And you don’t know what kind of worms they are.

    Take your dog to a vet to get a fecal and get dewormed. Its not that expensive… about $30. FYI some species of worms from dogs can be transmitted to humans.

    There’s a very effective medicine called Drontal Plus that takes care of many types of worms. It costs about $5 per pill plus the vet visit but it works. It’s made for worms but it is also effective on giardia (parasites that cause diarrhea).

    I know, I have a rescue full of kitties right now who have giardia and worms and this is what my vet recommended to treat them.

    Also, if your dog is an outdoor dog, you will want to use Drontal every six months because he’ll get them again. It’s the nature of outdoor animals eating whatever they find outside.

    Sounds like you have the problem figured out. But I suggest a trip to the vet. Their medicines are stronger and can be much more effective. One treatment and the problem should work itself out in the end.

    They are called pin worms. I don’t know how dogs get them but they are very commom. The worms eat the nutrition out of the food they eat. Your dog must have them bad because they are falling out. Take her to the vet & they can help you.

    This answer isn’t very appetising, but at night the worms come out, to lay eggs on the dogs rectum. This is what causes your dog to rub its behind on the ground. The worms will come out in the stool, but give it some time. If its a bad infestation, it may take a while. If the condition becomes worse, talk to a vet.

    I have a feeling people will disagree with me but when my puppy had them (this was 6 years ago) I called my vet freaking out, this was late on a Saturday and she said to crush up the tobacco in a cigarette and give it to her, it cleaned her out and even though this is gross as heck, she puked up the tobacco and worms too, 1st thing Monday morning we took her to the vet but this helped to wait it our for the weekend!

    Hi,
    Your dogie must have just been full of roundworms. Usually within two to three days the initial problem is well on the way to being solved. Next time, if you pluck a worm from your dogs behind – use a tissue, and be sure you re-dose your dog according to the directions on the box of medicine, otherwise you will just have to start over again when the worms show up. By the way, worms are caused by fleas,yea, fleas. I know that sounds weird but they are. Use a good flea and tic remover or a good flea and tic collar and your problem should be history. ~Blessings~

    the over the counter meds are only made for certain types of worms.
    you should get your dog tested to find out what type he has and there is one type of worm that HAS to be treated through a vet because the medication is prescribed.

    You need to find out what kind of worms your dog has before giving treatment. Different drugs work better for different types of worms. Take a fecal sample in to your vet and describe what the worm looked like. Also let them know what kind of treatment you’ve already given (take the bottle, if you still have it). You don’t want to make your dog sick by over-medicating him/her.
    Also, keep in mind that as the worms die off, they will have to come out and you’ll probably be seeing them in your dog’s poop. It’s a good idea to do a second round of treatment, in about a month, in case the first dose didn’t get them all. Have your dog’s poop checked about a month after the second round of treatment.
    Is your dog on a heartworm preventative, like Heartgard? Heartgard protects against several intestinal parasites, in addition to heartworms.
