My Dog was treated with heartworms and I was wondering if I can give her preventives instead of treatments. (We did give her ONE heartworm treatment that kills the adult worms, but we didn’t give her the rest.)
We started this about one year from now by just giving her preventives. She is active, dosen’t whimper, or anything. It’s like she is back to normal. Is that a good or warning sign??

    No, she needs heart worm treatment, no preventive. Heart worm preventive is only made to kill heart worms before the reach adulthood. Heart worm prevetive does not kill adult worms. Please take your dog back to the Vet for treatment. Most of the time with heart worm infestations, you don’t notice any signs or symptoms until it’s too late for treatment. Stop playing Vet and get her to a real one.

    If your dog had heart worm and you did not continue the treatment she still has them. One dose may not have killed the worms. Take your dog back to the vet to get tested. If she has them administer the medication correctly this time.

    The whole idea behind giving you medication to get rid of the heartworms is to give them to the dog. Why didn’t you give her the recommended dosages as prescribed by the vet? Heartworm infestation can kill your dog, so unless you want to bury her sooner then later, give her ALL the medication prescribed by your vet.

    Finish the treatment, if you truly love your dog, do the right thing. Then after she is cleared from heartworms, keep her on a heartworm prevention. Remember to have your pets spayed and neutered.

    P.S. by the time there are signs of the heartworms making her sick, it may be to late to do much to save her. Dying of heartworms is a very agonizing death.

    What does your vet say? Please don’t be embarrassed to ask her/him!
    I missed a couple of doses of the preventive, & my dog got heartworm. My vet put her on Heartgard for 6 months. After 3 months, she was clear, so she went back on Revolution. So, you CAN get through this.
