    No the mosquito is the one that does the passing of the heartworm.

    If there are mosquitos around, yes, in a roundabout way: the mosquito is what is called an intermittent carrier, necessary for the life cycle of the worm. This explanation is great:

    Yes it can. Heart worms are carried by a mosquito so if the mosquito bites that dog and then bites your dog your dog can become infected by that dog through the mosquito’s biting your dog.
    The chances of this happening are slim but it can happen.

    Not directly… but that is how heartworm is transmitted in a roundabout way. A mosquito feeds on an infected dog or animal that is carrying heartworm microfiliarae in its blood. Then inside the mosquito the heartworm larvae have to undergo an incubation period before the mosquito can transmit the heartworm to another dog or animal. It takes 14 days of a temp above 20C at ALL times for the heartworm to reach the L3 stage and migrate to the mosquitos mouthparts so it can be transmitted to another animal. So even if your dog was in the same room as a dog with heartworm and a few hundred hungry mosquitos, your dog still couldnt get heartworm unless it was kept there for 14 days while the larvae matured to the L3 infective stage inside the mosquitos who had fed upon the infected dog. There is no other way for your dog to get heartworm, it HAS to be through a mosquito, your dog cant just catch it directly from another infected dog.

    It can has and always will.It contaminates the dirt around the dog house and everything in its path. Im not a Vet but i own a kennel
