House Training for Your Dog
Good housetraining techniques teach your dog to relieve itself where and when you’d like it to. Dogs instinctively mark their own territory. Therefore, your goal is to teach your dog the boundaries of its territory. Housetraining can be learned in four to eight weeks and can start when your puppy is eight weeks old.
Below is some good house training tips :
- First of all, buy a crate and make sure it’s the right size: it should be large enough for comfort, but not too big otherwise the puppy will sleep at one end and use the other end for its business.
- Take the puppy out on a leash through the same door to the same spot every time, and when it does its business, reward with praise. If your puppy does not eliminate when you take it outside, bring it inside, put it in its crate for 15 minutes, and repeat the procedure until you achieve success. This time when you bring it in don’t put it back in its crate. Confine your puppy to a relatively small, safe area of your home and provide constant supervision until your puppy is housetrained.
- If you have to leave your puppy at home alone each day for long periods, restrict it to a larger area such as a small room or exercisepen. This area should have enough space for sleeping and eating. Several feet away, place paper where elimination is to be.o A common mistake is to let your dog go outside alone. Many dogs come back inside the house and then do their business. This causes most people tobecome upset. Their reaction inadvertently reinforces a negative behaviour.
- If your puppy does make a mistake inside, its important to get rid of the odoui. Effective products are available commercially and can be recommended by your vet. Using ammonia to clean up a mistake can actually make it worse and encourage the dog to return to the same place.
