Dog Training - Some Misconception
Many people, dog owners included, believe that a dog has to be trained relatively early in life. Beyond a certain age, the animal cannot be helped anymore.
Is this true?
Training is a vital part of developing and establishing the relationship between owner and pet.At the end of the day, it is the dog that suffers because of the owner’s lack of awareness.
Training is a vital part of developing and establishing the relationship between owner and pet. A dog that is well-handled is well-adjusted. And, yes, even the old dogs can be schooled.
Basically, all dogs are trainable. It’s preferable to begin a dog’s training when they are between the ages of six months to a year. However, you may trained a two-year-old dog the same way with the same results.
You can train a dog well but the results also have to be based on reasonable expectations. You cannot, and should not, expect a poodle to be a guard dog and behave like a German Shepard. The truth is that dogs don’t need training – people do. You, as a dog owner, should leatn how to communicate with dogs.
Dogs do the things they do because they don’t know it is wrong. You have to catch the dog at the point where they are about to do something and reprimand them with a simple ‘No’. You can’t do it after the fact.
If the dog has already chewed the slipper, reprimanding it would be useless. You are only serving to confuse the dog.
Too often dog owners take the easy way out when they can’t handle dog’s aggressive nature. We give up! Truly it is impossible to keep an eye trained on your dog to catch them red-handed, so to speak.
This is why you should laying down the rules early on so the dog understands what is acceptable and not. There are no such things as five-minute training sessions.
You cannot expect your dog to learn everything and be an expert after being told (off) once. You have to reinforce the message daily. It may be hard work but the rewards are worth it if you exercise patience.
Most of the problems dog owners face with their dogs today are because they didn’t take the trouble to fully comprehend their needs and their nature. Remember, it is never too late for you to train them the right way.
