No matter what breed of dog you have, whether long haired or short haired,  good dog grooming is important. The reasons for grooming your dog go a lot farther than just wanting your dog to look good. Not grooming your dog on a regular basis can negatively affect his health. It doesn’t matter if you groom your dog yourself or take him to a professional groomer, try to groom him at least once a month to keep him healthy.

Long hair on your dog will interfere with his ability to cool off. A dog will cool down by panting and by the air that is circulated through his pads. If he has long hair, it can interfere with the air circulation and keep your dog from cooling off effectively.

Crust can form in the corner of your dog’s eyes. If left there , it can develop into sores which will cause a lot of discomfort in your dog. Depending on the breed of dog you may not be able to see the crust in his eyes until his hair is cut or his head is washed thoroughly.

If your dog has long, overgrown nails, it can cause him to walk on the side of his foot pads and this can result in arthritis in the legs and hips. Keep your dog’s nails trimmed to prevent this from happening.

If you don’t groom your dog on a regular basis, he could develop a lot of matted hair. This can cause pain for your dog in addition to creating a great  breeding ground for fleas and ticks. Excess anal hair and hair in the ears are also a good host spot for fleas. This excess hair should be removed to avoid any problems. It is also important to keep hair free from your dog’s private parts. This is good hygiene because your dog may bring waste into your home because it becomes stuck to the hair around his private parts.

If you choose to bath your dog at home, groomers recommend that you brush him before putting your dog in the tub. This will get rid of any loose, dead hair and will also decrease the amount of hair left in your tub. Depending on the size of your dog, he may be small enough to be bathed in the bathroom or kitchen sink. This will save you from a lot of backache. It is best to start bathing your dog when he is a puppy and he will come to expect it as routine.  To bath your dog at home, it is best to use a handheld shower. This gives you better control and you can keep from getting water and shampoo in your dog’s eyes.

Dog grooming is very important for health and appearance reasons. Have a scheduled day each month for dog grooming. Stick to this schedule faithfully and you will have a healthy and happy dog.
