Can dogs & cats live together?

"Dog Obedience Training: STOP Your Dog's Behavior Problems!"

Can your dogs & cats live together in peace?

There is a saying that goes fight like cats and dogs? Well, in my experience, not all cats and dogs fight.

Introducing your cat to an all-dog household
There are a few ways to do this :

One, is to introduce your little kitten to a puppy, so they become playmates from young. If you introduce a full-grown cat to a dog, it takes longer. However, it is important that you monitor their play, to avoid any aggression between the two.

With gentle coaxing, cats and dogs may even become buddies. If your cat hisses at your dog, take him away and try again another time.

You may need to keep them apart for a while in the initial introduction stage and it may take some time (up to a few weeks) to get them accustomed to each other.

If you have more than one dog in your home, introduce your cat to them one at a time. Having to face too many dogs at a time will overwhelm your cat.

To avoid fighting, do not rush the introduction period. Some cats take longer to adjust to a dog, especially hound dogs who like to chase anything that moves. If possible, always have someone hold onto your dog while you hold on to your cat when they come face to face.

It is easy when your dog and cat become friends, but don't relax yet! Feeding time is another headache as dogs seem to LOVE cat food.

Feed your cat in a different room. Don't allow your cat to approach your dog when he is eating either. Your dog might attack your cat as he may think the cat is trying to steal his food.

Another problem is the transfer of fleas. Dog ticks do not transfer to cats but fleas are not fussy about their host. They would be just as happy buried in your dog as in your cat. So if you treat your dog for fleas, do the same for your cat.

Some cats will never get along with dogs, and vice versa. So if a situation arises where you just cannot get them to be friends, you have no choice but to keep them apart. Sometimes, it takes a long time (three months or more) for your cat and dog to be civil to each other.

Finally, don't force their friendship. It will come in time.

Dog Diseases

"Dog Obedience Training: STOP Your Dog's Behavior Problems!"

Dog Diseases
Some diseases, ailments, and poisons are common to both humans and dogs; others are different.

Most diseases that affect dogs or humans are not transferable between the two species. There are some exceptions:
  • Rabies, or Hydrophobia, is an often fatal disease that can be transmitted to humans by the bite of certain animals, including dogs. Areas that do not have the disease, such as Australia or the U.S. state of Hawaii, have strict quarantine laws to keep their territories rabies-free. Areas that do have the disease usually require that dogs be vaccinated against rabies. A bite from an unknown dog should always be treated, given the potentially fatal consequences if the dog was rabid.

  • Parasites, particularly worms such as tapeworms and roundworms, can be transmitted in a dog's saliva or feces.

  • Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that affects humans and animals. It is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. Humans and dogs become infected through contact with water, food, or soil containing urine from infected animals. This may happen by swallowing contaminated food or water or through skin contact, especially with mucosal surfaces, such as the eyes or nose, or with broken skin.
