Behavioural Problems - Dog Barking

Certain breeds are more vocal than others. For example, beagles bark a lot and greyhounds hardly ever make a sound. Smaller breeds, especially terriers, often prove to be the most noisy.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
- The first step in dealing with your dog’s barking is to gain an understanding of what stimulates its excessive barking behaviour. Keep a note of when and where the problem seems most persistent.
- Since barking is normal behaviour, it is more realistic to try to reduce it rather than eliminating it. For example, try teaching your dog to bark on command, then teach it to be quiet on command, and release excess energy with exercise.
- Obedience training, using positive and negative reinforcement, is a good addition to any dog’s life. Blowing a horn, shaking a can, dropping a water balloon or tossing a key ring can all be enough to divert its attention from barking. Be sure not to reward your dog in any way for barking inappropriately. Instead, praise it for being quiet. Remember, be consistent and practise your commands daily.
